About US

Wamukelekile ekhaya

Sabuntu Intercultural Society is a charity organization dedicated to co-creating programs that promote, preserve and nurture transcultural pride, embrace multiculturalism, and nurture communal solidarity. We center on collective liberation and serve communities of Melanated people of African descent, Indigenous peoples and all racial equity deserving people.

At Sabuntu, we live and breathe the principles of Ubuntu—a powerful African philosophy that teaches us, “We are because you are.” It embodies the essence of interconnectedness, communal solidarity, and collective well-being. Ubuntu is not just a catchphrase, but a way of life, where the strength of the whole community uplifts the individual and vice versa.

Our name, Sabuntu, is a fusion of Sankofa and Ubuntu. Sankofa, an Akan word from West Africa, Ghana encourages us to “go back and fetch it”—to learn from our past, honor our history, and build a brighter future grounded in the wisdom of our ancestors. This timeless concept of reflection and forward movement is at the heart of our mission to rise together, honoring where we’ve come from and where we’re going.

Our Story

Born from Experience, Driven by Ubuntu

With over two decades of living in Canada as an immigrant and settler, our founder understands the complexities of assimilation within a society built on structural biases. These inequities disproportionately impact marginalized communities, particularly through social determinants of health. With 13 years of fieldwork and community-building experience, our founder strives to close these gaps using culturally affirming, trauma-responsive, and equity-focused approaches.

Inspired by lived experience and professional expertise, our founder envisioned a transformative initiative grounded in justice, equity, and Ubuntu. Sabuntu Intercultural Society was born on December 1, 2024, in Vegreville, Alberta, where service gaps for racially marginalized groups were evident. S.I.S honors African ancestors trafficked to Canada and Indigenous peoples forced into servitude, working on stolen lands. We aim to address systemic inequities and create pathways to healing and collective liberation.

Creating Pathways for Healing and Unity

At Sabuntu, we are committed to Ubuntu in action—actively creating space for intercultural dialogue, healing, and the dismantling of systemic barriers. We rise together, acknowledging our shared humanity and building pathways for collective liberation. Join us as we move forward with Sankofawisdom and Ubuntu unity, creating a world where everyone thrives.

Together, we journey toward healing, empowerment, and Ubuntu.
